Should I Replace My Roof Before Getting Solar?
It's the most common question we get, and getting it wrong is the most expensive mistake in residential solar.
By Steve Maroney, founder of Power House Home Energy · Updated October 2026
If your asphalt roof is about 10–15 years old or older, usually yes. Solar panels are built to last 25–30 years, but Long Island asphalt roofs typically last 15–20. If the roof wears out first, the panels have to be removed and reinstalled, which commonly adds $3,000 to $7,000+ on top of the new roof. Replacing the roof first, ideally in the same project, avoids that entirely.
A simple rule by roof age
Under 10 years
Usually fine to go solar as-is. We still inspect it during your energy review.
10–15 years
Strongly consider replacing now. The roof will likely need work during the life of your panels.
15+ years
Replace first, or in the same project. Installing new panels on a worn roof means paying for labor twice.
Signs your roof needs replacing
Why doing both together saves money
When we replace your roof and install solar in the same project, one team is accountable for both. A roof replacement typically takes one day and most solar installs take one more.
Homeowners who did both
“Ended up getting a new roof and 19 solar panels. Roof was done professionally. Panels were done right on time. Whole system works amazing!”
Matt · Nesconset, NY · Google review“Everything from the roof replacement, the solar panel installation, all the permitting with the town, PSEGLI, electrical work. It was all handled by them seamlessly.”

Already have solar and need a new roof?
We remove, store and reinstall existing solar systems, including systems we didn't install, so your roof can be replaced safely. See Detach & Re-Install.
Common questions
How old should a roof be before I replace it for solar?
If your asphalt roof is around 10–15 years old or older, it usually makes sense to replace it before or together with solar. Long Island asphalt roofs typically last 15–20 years, while solar panels last 25–30.
How much does it cost to remove and reinstall solar panels for a roof replacement?
Removing, storing and reinstalling a solar system commonly adds $3,000 to $7,000+ in labor on top of the roof replacement itself. Doing the roof first avoids that cost.
How long does a roof and solar project take?
On install days, a typical roof replacement takes about one day and most solar installs take about one more. Permits and PSEG Long Island approval happen before that, and we handle all of it.
Will you check my roof before recommending solar?
Yes. We look at your roof's age and condition as part of every free energy review and tell you honestly whether it's ready for solar.
