Solar Fundamentals

How solar actually works.

Solar panels convert sunlight into DC electricity. Inverters (or microinverters, panel-by-panel) convert that into the AC power your home runs on. Your home uses that power first; anything extra you don't use can generate utility credits under Net Metering. At night or on low-production days, you draw from the grid as usual—unless you've added battery storage.

Myth: Panels don't work in cold climates

Solar generates from light, not heat—panels perform well in cold weather, and snow reflection can even boost output once cleared. Annual production is what matters, and Long Island gets strong year-round sun.

Myth: Solar damages your roof

Professional installation uses waterproof flashing designed for 25+ year performance, and typically protects the roof surface underneath from UV and weather rather than compromising it.

Myth: Panels need constant maintenance

Rain keeps panels largely self-cleaning, there are no moving parts to service, and monitoring alerts you automatically if production ever drops.

Critter guards

Mesh barriers installed around panel edges that keep birds, squirrels, and rodents from nesting underneath—protecting wiring from chewing damage and preventing debris buildup that can trap heat or block airflow.

Snow guards

Small barriers that slow and evenly distribute snow release from smooth panel surfaces, preventing sudden "roof avalanches" onto walkways, landscaping, or parked cars during Long Island winters.

Payment Options

Solar financing and ownership.

The right path depends on your goals—lowest monthly payment, fastest payback, or maximum long-term equity. up to 13 financing paths are available, but they generally fall into three categories.

Cash or Loan

Purchase the system directly or finance it over time while retaining ownership benefits from day one—NY Solar Tax Credit eligibility (25%, $5,000 max), no ongoing lease obligation, maximum long-term savings.

Participate Energy Pre-Paid Lease

25-35% incentive right off the top, paid upfront or financed—with a 6-year path to ownership for as little as $99. NY Solar Tax Credit eligibility (25%, $5,000 max). No ongoing lease payments and immediate savings on your electric bill.

Monthly Lease

A structured lease agreement with equipment service and warranty included. Fixed or adjustable payment options available—lower upfront commitment in exchange for a longer payoff horizon. NY Solar Tax Credit eligibility (25%, $5,000 max, based on total of annual lease payments).
